The Art of Noticing

I have always been fascinated by the way light enters a room—bouncing, shimmering, reflecting, and most of all, by the beautiful shadows it casts.

For some time now, I’ve been using my home as a small laboratory for these observations. Whenever I notice an interesting light pattern on a wall, I dash to grab my camera and try to capture it. Sometimes the beautiful light lasts only a few seconds, and by the time my finger is on the shutter, it has already faded away.

This morning, as we were getting ready to walk to school, my son called out, “Come and see this, Mum! There’s a nice pattern on the wall.” As I entered the room, I saw this beautiful, dancing light and quickly began filming it, aware that it could disappear at any moment.

After the mission was complete, I realised it had been a joint effort. I thanked my son for his help and gave him the official title of Assistant Light Chaser.

That moment made me realise how my son has been quietly observing my fascination with light—and how he too has developed a sensitivity and awareness toward it.

The art of noticing is a skill that can be learned, sharpened, expanded, and, in this case, even passed on.
